Avis Brown-Riley
Fourteen years ago, Avis began her fight against Breast Cancer. Thanks to divine intervention, she has been cancer-free for thirteen years. Her purpose now is to share her life journey and inspire others by promoting health awareness, healthy lifestyles, life skills, citizenship, and golf.
Avis was introduced to golf by her father at the age of seven. Throughout her junior years, Avis achieved numerous victories, including becoming the first African American to win the Junior World Golf Championship. She made history by winning the San Diego City Women’s Amateur Championship shortly after high school. Avis attended United States International University on a golf scholarship and earned the title of rookie of the year based on her numerous collegiate tournament victories.
After college, Avis pursued a professional golf career. She won the Michelob Classic and competed in the United States Women’s Open. She made LPGA history, becoming the first African American female to play in the US Women & Sr. US Women Open. Avis is an inductee of the San Diego Hall of Champions and the African American Golfers Hall of Fame, where she serves as a Board Member, and a recipient of the PGA Heritage award.
Avis has also impacted Corporate America in her career as an Operations Manager with FEDEX. In February 2018, Avis and her team published her first book: Building of a Champion, How I became a Champion in Life: The Avis Brown-Riley Story. Avis is showcased in the USGA Golf Museum and her book is on display at the USGA Golf Museum and Library.
In 2020, Avis achieved her dream and became an LPGA Class A Golf Professional and worked at the renowned Torrey Pines Golf Course. After a 25-year break from competitive golf, she participated in the LPGA 2021 National Championship Senior’s Division, securing the 15th position.
Avis has dedicated 25 years to coaching and teaching golf . Today, cancer-free for thirteen years, Avis and her brother, Gordon Jr., continue to build the ABR Golf brand with a mission to share the joy of golf with women and children around the world.
